Spring at the Lake…

June 8th, 2010

The spring has been fabulous! It’s so nice to see the flowers growing and blooming. Summer is coming and some though Canadians (I assume) are swimming in Lake Huron already!

Spring has sprung!

March 14th, 2010

Spring is almost here! After a few blustery and wet days all the snow is almost gone! I do hope the squirrels left my over 300 planted tulip and crocus bulbs alone. Can’t wait to see the color festival! :-)

Spring is almost here.......

Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2010

Dear Romantic Log Cabin Friends,

Tom, the kids and I  want to wish everyone a happy, healthy 2010! We hope everybody had a great Holiday Season and is ready to start the New Year with great optimism! We’ve had a great year at the Romantic Log Cabin. We met new people and welcomed back many guests from previous years.
During this past year we noticed that more and more people book early and I would encourage you to do that as well. Several weeks of the summer 2010 are already booked. We hate to have to turn guests down! I also would like to mention that the Romantic Log Cabin is a cottage for all seasons. After all it is -The Most Romantic Spot Along Ontario’s West Coast- ! Today it is snowing and blowing…….just imagine, sitting in front of the fireplace with  a nice cup of tea, look outside and watch the dancing snowflakes….:-)

Have a safe winter!

Your Romantic Log Cabin Hosts,

Thomas and Vreni Beeler with family

“Christmassy Applepunch with Schwipps”

December 12th, 2009

This recipe is very yummy and perfect for the season!

You’ll need: 1 litre of “Fruittea” (or Orangetea), 1 litre of applecider, one or two cinnamon sticks, half a teaspoon of Allspice, 1-2 Tbsp. of Sugar (or more if you like).  Heat everything up (Crockpot works great for this). Add a few slices of apples, oranges and lemons and leave in for 10 min. Then take oranges and lemonslices out (so it doesn’t turn bitter).

Dip the rim of a mug in lemonjuice and then in a cinnamon/sugar mixture. Add some “Schwipps” (Spiced Rum) to the mug and fill with the hot applecider. Add a cinnamon stick and serve! Kids love this too but of course without the “Schwipps”! Cheers!

Potato Bread

July 15th, 2009

Ingredients for Vreni’s potato  bread:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (2 cups for larger amount)

3 cups white flour (5 cups for larger amount, rest of ingredients stay the same but needs more milk)

1 tbsp. salt (mix with flour)

1 tbsp Molasses OR sugar

1 1/2 tbsp. dry yeast

2 medium potatoes (boiled the day before)

~ 4 dl warm milk

Start by adding the molasses (or sugar) into a cup,  add the yeast and about 1/4 cup of lukewarm! water; let sit at room temperature until it starts to “bubble”.

Put flour into a big bowl and make a dent in the middle ot the flour. Pour yeast mixture in. Peel potatoes and grate very fine on top of yeast mixture.

Add the warm milk and knead dough thorough until soft and smooth. Depending of the flour and the size of the potatoes you’ll have to add more milk or more flour!

Put dough into the bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise to at least double.

Form one or two loafes  (or buns). Let rise for 1/2 - 1 hr on a warm spot (covered with the wet towl).

Brush with egg white, cut a pattern on top of it (if you wish) and bake at 365 F for ~ 40 min. Smaller buns about 20 min.

American Wind Symphony Orchestra, July 9-13,2009

May 26th, 2009

One of the stops of The American Wind Symphony Orchestra’s 2009 Tour will be Goderich. With only 3 stops on Canadian shores – Windsor, Goderich and Sault Ste. Marie – this is an extremely unique and rare opportunity. Goderich will be hosting the A.W.S.O from July 9 to July 13, 2009.

The American Wind Symphony Orchestra is composed of approximately 45 young musicians who are dedicated to their art and this organization has been entertaining people worldwide for fifty-two years. The venue for the concert is their one-of-a-kind barge, the Point Counterpoint II, which is a 195 foot floating art centre. The magic of the concert is captured with the beginning strains of music as the hydraulically operated centre ceiling raises to reveal the orchestra on this floating band shell. For more information please go to www.goderich.ca. This is going to be very special!
